Spring 2022 Grow Guide
Everything you need to know about planting and nurturing your new seeds to a great harvest!
This is the library of how-to’s for the 2022 Spring Seed Collection.
These seeds all germinate with warmer temps but some do better directly sown in the garden once all chance of frost is safely past and some need to be started indoors to get a head start before transplanting out. For seed starting indoors, I recommend using supplemental grow lights if your light is anything less than optimal and also recommend using a heat mat as some of these seeds take a while to germinate. Adding a heat source to the root area will speed things along. A humidity dome also helps keep your seeds moist until they sprout. You can use all sorts of things for that purpose, such as overturned plastic takeout container lid. Once the seeds start to sprout, pop the lid. Once half of them have, remove the lid entirely. Once most of the seeds have germinated, remove them from the heat source or you may get mold and the fatal damping off, or your seedlings may become leggy. I like to turn a ceiling fan on at night to help keep the air circulating. Turn off the lights on new seedlings for at least 6 hours a day so they can store energy and gather strength. I also recommend moving any houseplants far away from where your seedlings are as fungus gnats will kill your seedlings before you are even aware it’s happening. My absolutely favorite growing containers for most veggies are these little reusable seed starters. They have a vent you can open and let you easily water from below.
I recommend reading through the guides below entirely when you get your seeds so you can sort your seeds into piles of when they need to be planted out. Make reminders to yourself in your phone for when you should plant certain seeds. Some need to be sown straight away and some are best sown directly once it gets hot. Keep your seeds stored in the outer envelope and store it in the fridge. Keep shiso seeds in the freezer at all times.
